Have you found a glowing gem while playing Valor Mortis, but don’t know what to do with it? You’re not alone. Most players find their first Amber fairly early in the game, but the opportunity to use it comes later. According to the latest guide from PC Gamer, these Embers grant your character, William, passive bonuses and special powers.

What exactly is Amber?
Valor Mortis’ skill tree is fairly straightforward, focusing mostly on passive buffs. Embers are what adds a bit of spice to your build. These are rare gems that, when slotted, grant different benefits. If you’re looking to try something new while still playing the same gameplay, Embers are a great fit.
When and how to apply the first Amber?
This is where most people get stuck. You must be level 5 to equip Amber.Even if you have Amber before this, you cannot use it.
After reaching level 5, do the following:
- Go to any lantern and open the level up menu there.
- At the bottom of the menu, you will see a new slot marked with a “+”.
- Click on that slot and select the Amber you want to place.
One thing that’s comforting: your decision isn’t set in stone. You can change colors whenever you want, so feel free to experiment with different combinations.
How many slots are available in total?
You only get one slot at first, but every ten levels a new slot unlocks:
- First slot:Level 5
- Second slot:Level 15
- Third slot:Level 25
- Fourth slot:Level 35
- Fifth slot:Level 45
This means there are a total of five Amber slots in the game. As you progress, your build will become more refined.

Where can I find new Embers?
According to the guide, most new Embers are obtained by completing quests and opening chests. So, skipping side quests and jumping straight to the main story might not be a good idea. A habit of exploring every corner and every chest pays off here.
Don’t be disappointed if you get a duplicate Amber
Often times, it’s frustrating to find the same item again in games, but here it’s the opposite. If you already have an Amber and find it again, that Amber levels up, and its passive bonus becomes more powerful. So, the next time you see that same gem again, be happy.
Some useful advice
- Do not leave the slot empty. As soon as a new slot opens, put something in it. An empty slot is a straight-up loss.
- Keep experimenting. It might be wise to go to the Lantern and change Embers before the boss fight, as there are no restrictions on changing.
- Pay attention to every quest. The main source of new Embers are quests and chests, so exploring doesn’t go to waste.
The Amber system in Valor Mortis may seem small, but it has a significant impact on your playstyle. The first slot is at level 5, followed by a new slot every ten levels, and a power boost as you acquire duplicates. If you’re a beginner, reach level 5 first, then go to a lantern and place your first Amber.
