There was a time when the mere mention of GTA would raise eyebrows among parents, politicians, and the police. Today, the news of the arrival of Grand Theft Auto 6 has the world in a frenzy. PC Gamer journalist Andy Chalk has written a fascinating report on this very change, in which he reached out to the man who once fought the most fiercely against video games. That name is Jack Thompson.

When “Hot Coffee” created a storm
Nearly 20 years ago, a mod called “Hot Coffee” caused a major uproar in the gaming world. It activated a hidden code within GTA: San Andreas, unlocking a controversial mini-game.
As a result, in 2005, the ESRB changed the game’s rating to “Adults Only.” Removing it from store shelves was a serious matter at the time, so the game suffered a major setback. It was even banned in Australia. The US Federal Trade Commission also questioned Rockstar and Take-Two.

How much has the picture changed today?
GTA 6 is now set to arrive on consoles, and the latest ESRB rating lists gore, intense violence, nudity, strong language, and drug and alcohol use. It’s rated M, meaning it’s for ages 17 and up. PEGI Europe considers it 18+. A since-removed listing also mentioned “detailed decapitation” and “frequent and prominent” drug use.
Yet the atmosphere isn’t the same as before. According to the author, a major reason for this is that we ourselves have grown up. Statistics from the Entertainment Software Association for 2025 indicate that the average gamer in the US is 36 years old and has been playing for about 18 years. This means that today’s police, politicians, and parents are all people who grew up playing GTA.
The author raised another point: The social disintegration that some warned about due to games never materialized. On the contrary, the number of gamers has increased over the past two decades, and violent crime has declined.

The status of the conversation with Thompson
Now let’s get to the real issue. There was a time when Jack Thompson was a very popular and controversial figure among gamers. He campaigned to link violent games to real-life violence and enforce stricter regulations. He had a long-standing feud with Rockstar co-founder Sam Houser. His character was even featured in a BBC docudrama, “The Gamechangers,” starring Bill Paxton.
GTA 6 is having several promotional partnerships in Florida, and Andy Chalk wanted to know what Thompson thought about this. In response, Thompson described the government’s promotion of commercial interests as akin to fascism and suggested the sheriff be questioned about this “coalition.”
Chalk had even asked the Sheriff’s Department. The department stated that it had no concerns about the promotional decisions of private companies and organizations. When this was pointed out to Thompson, he became enraged. He launched sharp accusations at the reporter, made harsh comparisons, and told him not to bother again. In a subsequent email, he even denied Chalk was an “honest journalist.”

What is the real point in this whole story?
The author felt a little regret. He had hoped that after so many years, Thompson’s attitude would have softened, or at least he would be able to reflect calmly on the changed world. That did not happen.
In Chalk’s opinion, what Thompson fought all his life has been won. Today, GTA appears on Netflix, appears on NBA jerseys, is sold at Walmart, and even the state of Florida is embracing it. Yet, the world is doing just fine. For someone who staked everything on the prediction that GTA would undermine society, this outcome may be a bit disappointing.
at last
It could be said that the story of GTA isn’t just about a single game, but about the changing perspectives of an entire era. What was once considered “danger” is now mainstream entertainment. What we should expect from GTA 6 will only be known after its release, but it’s clear that the debate is no longer the same.
