GTA 5 Doom 2 Mod: Demons, BFG and First-Person Chaos in Los Santos

Every week, the world of modding sees an experiment that sounds like a joke, but actually works. This trend has been going on for years with GTA 5, and now it’s joined by another big name: the 1994 classic shooter Doom 2.

PC Gamer’s Joshua Wolens is adding a new mod to GTA 5 every day in his daily modding series “Los Santos Customs.” His goal is to either turn it into a PC version of GTA 6 or completely break it. This time, he admitted he might have gone too far.

“GTA 5 is now Doom, that’s it”

The author’s opening lines say it all. According to him, he couldn’t think of a way to introduce the news, so he simply stated that GTA 5 had become Doom.

The name of the mod isDoom 2 in GTA 5 Hell On Earth(D2IGTA5HOE). This imports the DOOM2.wad file into GTA 5, and the game’s appearance changes. The game becomes first-person, you get a minigun and BFG, and monsters start appearing on the streets.

How does it work?

It’s easy to operate. Pressing F9 switches the game from third-person open-world action to a Doom 2-style setting. Note that you’ll need to import your own DOOM2.wad file; the mod doesn’t include it. The author’s quip was to keep calm and not call the police.

Interestingly, you don’t enter the Doom 2 map. The world remains the same, Los Santos, except you’re armed with id Software’s weapons from that era. This means you can attack taxis with a super shotgun and take on cops with a plasma cannon.

The real havoc begins when you press F10. The game switches to “Hell On Earth” mode, and Doom 2’s true enemies appear on the streets. A seemingly peaceful city can quickly become a battlefield.

Button feud: flossing vs. monsters

There was also a funny technical glitch in the whole thing. The author had pre-set F10 to activate the flossing dance and Superman mode. As a result, when they tried to fight the monsters, a quarter of the screen would be filled with the flossing menu, and occasionally, Superman’s powers would awaken.

But they found something good about it. One of those powers is super speed while running, and that fits the hero of Doom perfectly.

Storm, Fury, and Demon, all together

Wolens also shared a GIF of the mod, showing him fighting demons and armed furry characters with Doom 2 weapons at an airport, while a storm approaches from behind.

The scene is reminiscent of how mods have been piling on top of each other in their series. Stormtroopers and furry gangs have appeared in the past, and now the demons of Doom have joined the fray. The result is a game that’s neither fully GTA nor fully Doom.

Our opinion

This news isn’t just about a fun mod, but also about the fact that PC gaming’s greatest strength lies in its modders. A massive open-world game from 2013, a shooter from 1994, and the ability to manage both simultaneously is found only in the community.

If you play GTA 5 on PC and want to try something crazy, this mod could be fun. Just be sure to back up your save file before installing it, as running multiple mods simultaneously can cause the game to behave strangely. And of course, use your legitimate copy of DOOM 2.
