Souls-like games have a long-standing tradition: introducing a boss at the very beginning that seems nearly impossible to defeat. Valor Mortis takes on this responsibility.General Lothaire, the Eagle-BearerSean Martin, Senior Guides Writer at PC Gamer, has written an interesting guide on this boss, where he tries to defeat it and see what happens instead of giving up.

Only one chance, after that the boss disappears
The most unique thing about this fight is that you get to fight Lothair.only one chanceIf you die, a cutscene ensues. In it, a character named Lucjan comes to your rescue and provides you with a wealth of information about the world. The boss then disappears and is never seen again.
This means the game wants you to lose this battle. Losing unlocks the next part of the story. Most players will likely do just that and advance the story.

ALT + F4 trick
Now comes the fun part. In his quest to defeat Lothair, Sean Martin has discovered a trick. The moment your character dies,ALT + F4When you reload the game, you’ll usually be right outside the boss arena and can fight again.
This isn’t an official feature, but rather the author’s own invention, and he describes it as a “generally” working trick. This means it’s not guaranteed to work every time.
What do you get if you win?
If you defeat Lothair, you get the following rewards:
- 10,000 catalysts(Think of them in this game roughly the same as souls in other Souls-like games.)
- General’s Catalyst Clot, which provides another 10,000 catalysts
- Torn-Banner achievement
This is a significant bonus for early leveling. It’s also a good thing that Valor Mortis doesn’t have boss weapons. So you can spend Clot without worrying about missing out on something special.
The author has clearly acknowledged one thing: they’ve defeated the boss, so they can’t say for sure whether Lothair will appear again later. This may be your only chance to get the Torn-Banner achievement.
So is it worth trying again and again?
The author’s answer is:Not much.Valor Mortis isn’t a very difficult game by Soulslike standards, so an initial leveling boost won’t make much of a difference. However, if you’re looking for a challenge or achievement, try these three suggestions:
- Use fire. When your Nephtoglobin is full, burn Lothair with fire. This causes damage over time (DoT) on him.
- Parry in the first phase. If the parry is right, you get a chance for a critical attack.
- Focus on dodge in the second phase. His combos are relatively predictable. Dodge them and strike when you get the chance.
The author also says that they played a little more cautiously in the second phase, and you can be more aggressive than that if you want.

The best part of this entire story is that the game allows you to both win and lose. Losing progresses the story, and winning rewards you with a significant reward. If you’re playing for the first time, perhaps you should just let the experience be the way the game intended. Lose, watch the cutscene, explore the world, and move on. And if you’re a stubborn player who can’t rest until you defeat a boss, the three tips above will come in handy.
