Rick and Morty madness comes to GTA 5: A reporter mods Los Santos into a “science fiction haven”

The GTA 5 modding community surprises us every few days, but PC Gamer reporter Joshua Wolens’ latest experiment is truly unique. He modded GTA 5 Rick and Morty Installed a themed mod, and funny enough, he admitted he had never seen a single episode of the show.

Where did it all begin?

This isn’t an isolated experiment. Wolens currently runs a series called “Los Santos Customs,” where he mods GTA 5 daily. His goal is to either make it look like GTA 6 on PC, or completely break it. In this series, he’s already turned the game into a golf sim, a Pokémon Go-like experience, and a shapeshifting game. He’s also incorporated scams, frictionless vehicles, tornadoes, and even Doom 2 into GTA 5.

His “know-how” about the show

The most interesting thing about this article is its premise. Wolens explained that all he knew about Rick and Morty was that it featured a scientist, a boy, a special song that played occasionally, and that people had very strong reactions to the show. That was the end of his “research.” So he thought, why not try to explain the show through mods?

What do you get in the mod?

He installed a mod called “Rick, Two Crows, and Morty” for GTA 5. With the press of a button, several elements from the show are brought into the game:

  • A boy you can change his size
  • Guns like lasers and light rings
  • a car like a flying saucer
  • Pokéballs that create black holes (normal Pokéballs are also present elsewhere in the game)

Pressing the F7 button transforms Trevor into Rick (or perhaps Morty) in a lab coat and a dirty T-shirt. Meanwhile, the everyday chaos of Los Santos continues: natural disasters, disappearing buildings, and flying cars.

When everything got out of hand

GTA 5 chaos with a black hole, tornado and laser gun effects in Los Santos

This is where the story gets really interesting. The Wolens were throwing black hole Pokéballs and firing lasers at people, when another mod displayed a notification on the screen that said, “The American people have been wiped out.” They simply ignored it.

Even piloting the flying saucer proved impossible. He could only move it up and down, and it would occasionally spin in the air. Then, suddenly, he was teleported to a bar in a rural area north of San Andreas. There, he threw a Pokéball behind the bar and quietly exited.

The scene outside was even more bizarre. A tornado was swallowing the entire “Furry” contingent, and their bodyguard was pulled into the black hole inside the bar, clinging to the outer wall like iron filings, screaming. Wolens jokingly wrote that he could understand his predicament.

What does all this mean?

To be honest, this isn’t serious tech news, but rather a glimpse into gaming culture. GTA 5 has been out for so many years, yet modders continue to reinvent it every time. Even a stranger who hasn’t even seen the show was able to laugh their way through this mod, which in itself speaks volumes about the power of modding.

The best part of this article is its humorous tone. The reporter is laughing at himself, making his own stupidity a part of the game, and taking the reader along with him. If you also like the chaos in GTA 5, this mod might be worth trying, just always play it in single player. Using the mod in online mode may result in an account ban. Be sure to back up your game files before installing the mod.
